C.S Matiangi reports to me and Uhuru, DP Ruto lies BBC

Deputy President William Ruto has rubbished claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta has elbowed him out of the heart of power to obstruct his 2022 presidential bid.

“His (Matiangi’s) committee is a Cabinet committee that reports to the President and myself. How on earth can you talk of sidelining if the same committee ultimately reports to the President and myself?” said Ruto

For the first time, Ruto dismissed claims that Uhuru’s reorganisation of the executive, placing Interior CS Fred Matiang’i at the helm, was meant to diminish him.

The DP maintained that he and Uhuru planned the reorganisation together and categorically state that Matiang’i reports to him (Ruto).

“Those sideline stories have no basis at all. The functions of the Deputy President are in the Constitution. The President and I agreed how we are going to make government much more efficient and to deliver,” Ruto said.

He was speaking on BBC’s Hard Talk show hosted by Stephen Sackur.

On January 23 in a surprise decision, Uhuru named Matiang’i — known as Mr Fix It — chairman of the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee.

He’s the development czar, a super-minister charged with implementing Uhuru’s Big Four. The committee includes all CSs, Attorney General Kihara Kariuki and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua. The powerful committee is responsible for the overall supervision of all national government’s programmes and projects.

The Matiangi-led committee reports directly to the President, according to the Executive Order that established it. Pundits say the elevation of Matiangi to a ‘super minister’ has overshadowed Ruto and sapped his influence.

Ruto had been going around the country inspecting, launching projects and distributing in what appeared to be blatant campaigning.

President uhuru kenyatta has warned striking nurses against disobeying court orders, kenyatta said tahtobeying court orders is not optional but a requirement of all Kenyans.

Here is the statement:
This morning, at State House, Nairobi, I held a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Health and the Council of Governors to discuss the important issue of the provision of health services. As the National and County Governments, we have a cardinal responsibility to provide adequate and accessible health care to all Kenyans. It is greatly disheartening to learn that some of our nurses have decided to engage in unlawful withdrawal of their labour against the determination of the Employment and Labour Relations Court, which suspended any industrial action for sixty days pending conciliation meetings. I have directed that all nurses should resume duty with immediate effect, and in any case, not later than Friday the 15th of February 2019 at 8:00 a.m. The respective County Governments will therefore be at liberty to undertake any action, as they deem appropriate, against personnel who fail to resume duty as directed by the Employment and Labour Relations Court. We have a clear development agenda. As an investment destination, and a Government that seeks to provide services to her people, we cannot allow unlawful industrial actions to derail us from our focus of taking Kenya forward.

The National Police Service has promised to firmly deal with striking nurses.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the service also assured the public that adequate security will be provided around public hospitals throughout the striking period.

The statement comes a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered all nurses to report to work by February 15 or face dismissal by the county government and the Health ministry.

Uhuru instructed the National Police Service to take stern action against picketers who might harass public servants going to work.

Last week, the court suspended the nurses’ strike for 60 days. This was after the Council of Governors sought an injunction to enable both parties to negotiate.

However, on Wednesday, the Kenya National Union of Nurses’ secretary general Seth Panyako maintained their strike is still on despite Uhuru’s threat to sack and arrest those participating.

“I have no mandate to respond to the President. If I do I will be overstepping my mandate. I urge our members to remain firm and fight for their rights. If there will be something otherwise we will advise them accordingly,” Panyako said.

3 Cabinet secretaries placed on DPP,DCI radar over corruption allegations

The directors of an Italian firm have recorded a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection with the allegations of three Cabinet secretaries for receiving kickbacks from contractors engaged in State projects.

According to sources, the three were in a group of Government officials that flew to Rome, Italy, to receive kickbacks from a contractor who was controversially paid Sh7 billion.

“Some of you contractors pay tickets for Government officers to travel to European capitals to receive the kickbacks and we know,” said one of the top officials, according to a person present at the meeting.

A source explained that the official cited a case where a State agency paid a contractor Sh7 billion in advance, yet the process of acquiring the land for the project had not been concluded.

Contractors and senior State officials have come under investigation over a growing trend where hefty bribes are paid out, mostly in foreign capitals, to influence peddlers.

Powerful individuals, including members of the Cabinet, principal secretaries and parastatal chiefs mainly handling key infrastructural projects, are said be involved.

Over 500 contractors attended the meeting in which the Government warned foreign contractors that they would be jailed or deported for bribing public officers.

The money involved is normally from projects funded by international donors and financiers, where crooked public officers facilitate advance payments (mobilisation fee) that are then wired back home.

This invite serves to notify you of a national Vigil, which shall take place in Nairobi Thursday 14th, starting from 4pm.

FEMICIDE is a form of gender based killing, in specific the Murder of Women from different walks of life following demeanors that Women are weak, unbecoming and undeserving to enjoy the Right to life; A Right enshrined in both International Laws and outlawed in Article 43 of the Kenyan Constitution (The Bill of Rights).

Femicide is powered by the erroneous belief in Male dominance, power and privilege over Women. Therefore Following efforts to shun and call out perpetrators of this crime against humanity by Grassroots Movements in Kenya, under the steer- ship of GRASSROOTS WOMEN INITIATIVE NETWORK – KENYA who started fighting FEMICIDE in 2018, this Vigil shall commemorate all the Victims of FEMICIDE in Kenya.

In a special way, we shall honour A WOMAN NATIONALIST, POLITICAL ACTIVIST, FREEDOM FIGHTER and Victim of FEMICIDE, Muthoni Nyanjiru who was executed in Broad day light on March 16th by the Colonialists in 1922. This was after leading over 200 women fighters to lament and March against the arrest of Harry Thuku, a trade unionist and fighter for women against the issues of Forced labour, physical and Sexual Abuse by the colonialists.

Over 100 women were brutally murdered. We GRASSROOTS WOMEN INITIATIVE NETWORK – KENYA, are convinced that this murder on 16th March 1922 set precedence and since killed the essence of civic virtues and planted a bias against women. Few known cases of those killed like Sharon Otieno, Maribel Kapolon, and recently Mary Kamangara and Mildred of Nation Media group are an indicator that there are many more dying daily and Kenya has a dysfunctional criminal Justice system which is overly patriarchal.

Wajir Governor Abdi has baunced back to the county top seat in a supreme court ruling.
In a ruling made by chief justice David Maraga and Smokin Wanjala the two who said the vote taken was 4 against 2 .
Maraga said the secrecy of the ballot was breached and in his opinion could have annulled the election of Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud.
The top court has been on the spot over the delay in the delivery of the decision, the case having gone on for more than a year.
After the poll, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Mr Abdi, former Kenyan ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the winner.

He defeated his closest rival Mr Ahmed Abdullahi while Ahmed Muhumed (Party of Development and Reforms) emerged third in what was seen as the most competitive contest in the county’s history.
Mr Abdi’s victory was short-lived as Mr Abdullahi and his counterpart challenged it at the High Court, alleging “massive” malpractices.

The challengers also argued that Mr Abdi had not been cleared to vie for the seat.

The former ambassador became the first governor in the country to lose his seat.
Last week, Wajir Senator Abdullahi Ali said the long court battle had affected development, thereby making the people’s lives difficult. He said it had “put our county in a great mess”.
